How to Get Better at Black Ops: 5 Tips to Improve Your Game

5 Tips:
So you just bought Black Ops, and you are wondering why you are getting owned? Or maybe you are just striving to be better than your friends. Well here are 5 tips that are sure to help you improve your game.
Tip 1: Switch your button layout to tactical. It might take some time to get used to, but trust me, tactical layout will help you avoid a lot of situations where you would normally be killed by making it easier to go prone/dolphin dive. If you are unfamiliar with what this does, tactical layout makes your right stick crouch and switches knifing to B on Xbox 360 or O on PS3. Think about it, is it more important to be able to aim while you are going prone, or while you are knifing? Going Prone of course because knifing does not take nearly as much accuracy as shooting.
Tip 2: Run and Hide! No, I'm not saying camp in a corner, or lay down crawling around all game, but what I am saying is that if you are being triple teamed, you don't necissarily need to try and take them all on at once. You see, since Stopping Power has been taken out of Black Ops, it takes 1 more bullet (sometimes 2) to kill. This means 2 things. First, it is possible to evade a firefight by going around a corner and waiting for your health to recover, where in Modern Warfare 2, if someone spotted you, you were pretty much a dead man. Second, you can't go around taking on 3 enemies in one clip anymore. In Modern Warfare 2, seeing 3 enemies around a corner on the UAV felt like an opportunity, in Black Ops, it feels like a problem. The main point is that you don't always need to face your enemies head up now. You can shoot at them, and if they seem to have the upper hand, hide behind a dumpster or sandbag or some type of cover.
Tip 3: Always stay near a corner of a wall or somewhere you can find cover. This goes along with Tip 2. In Modern Warfare 2, cover didn't do all that much. If you poked around a corner and the enemy got the upper hand in the fight, you were pretty much dead. Now, if they get the upper hand, you can just duck back behind that corner, and have another chance at the battle. It's all about giving yourself the upper hand. Again, I'm not saying always be crawling around under walls, I'm just saying you should always be aware of where you can run to if you start getting shot.
Tip 4: NEVER, EVER, EVER, sprint around a corner. Sure this may seem like a little stupid tip, but sprinting causes you to not be able to use your weapon for about half a second after you stop sprinting. You know how much time it takes for an enemy to kill you? About half a second. So if you sprint around a corner, and an enemy starts shooting at you, you are pretty much screwed unless he is a horrible shot.
Tip 5: Use your grenades! No, i'm not saying spam them over walls whenever you spawn. What I am saying, is say you are playing Search and Destroy, and you are approaching a high trafficed building. A good way to check if someone is inside is by throwing your concussion grenades inside and seeing if you get a hit-marker. This also goes along with Tip 2. Let's say you are walking and you spot an enemy, but he also spots you. He gets the upper hand. A good thing to do would be duck under some cover, and chuck your Semtex and maybe a concussion grenade at him. Again, always give yourself the upper hand.
In conclusion, let's go over a scenario where you use these tips to turn a disaster into something good. You are playing Search and Destroy. It is you vs. 3 enemies in the last round. You walk out of a door, and see 2 of them walking next to eachother. Instead of shooting right away, the best thing to do would be to throw a concussion grenade at them. Stunning them both. Now you start shooting at them. You kill one, but the other shoots back and hits you twice. You use your newly acquirred tactical layout to lay down quickly behind a cement block, and throw your Semtex. You kill one enemy, but notice you got a hit-marker on another. Now you throw your second concussion grenade. You don't want to pop up in the same place to shoot the enemy, because that is where he expects you to be, so you creep around the edge of the cement block, and shoot the enemy from your new location. Congrats, you just clutched the match. I garuntee that if you use these 5 tips, your gameplay quality WILL increse.

ok thats stupid thers two guys that already see you and your first thought is to throw a concussion grenade first off if it was one person he'd already shoot you down befor the grenade even leaves the hand and were talkin about two people ready to shoot and you throw a grenade is stupid and a big fail and will rarely work unless if your playing with idiots that cant shoot for shit or beginers but go ahead and do what he says shit your makin it easy for me to shoot you down
hype: I think the author assumes that the two enemies don't see you. Otherwise, I agree, you'd be dead before the FB or concussion left your hand. If somehow they did not see you then I probably try what he said. I might be more inclined to cook off a frag and toss it (assuming I'm out of sight) before stunning and shooting.
Hype I don't know what game your playin but concussion grenades throw in about .2 seconds and with most guns in black ops it takes about .5 seconds to kill (unless you have rapid fire) So it would be quite easy to get a concussion off. And FYI if you watch any MLG gameplay you'd know that all the pro gamers take full use of their grenades when they are in a sticky situation.

...It's funny how I actually googled this but.. To me these were the basics.. Mostly common sense.. except the tactical layout.. No one can just 'get' better by reading some instructions. It's all in the way you react to something on the game. And if you can REALLY control your person as in, when you shoot, you dont just spray you precisely aim. You gotta learn to handle the recoil

I recommend using the theater mode to watch some games. In particular watch the highest rated player/players and see how they move, where they go, how they react, and the way they play in general. It's pretty hard to describe how to be a better player, but watching someone who is dominating should give you some clues as how not to suck. Might not make you a beast at the game but if you pay attention you can at least become competent.
All this talk about that kid being 13. I just turned 14 and I have a kdr of 1.6 on black ops. Is it surprising that young kids play this game

I think what people are getting at is that at 13 years old you shouldn't be wasting your life playing video games 24/7 and should instead be learning responsible life lessons. There really is a problem with the amount of little kids online, I don't have a problem with 14, 15 but I was in a lobby and there was a 15th prestige kid who said he was 10.... are you kidding me? parents are letting kids substitute outside interaction and childhood experiences with video games. I was born in 91' and grew up through the 90's and the times I spent with my friends riding bikes or hanging out at the pool are the times I reflect upon not when I beat Mortal Kombat II on very hard. good tips, except for tactical controls, i used to play on tactical but im more of a run and gun so i like having the right thumb for melee. My ratio is 3.01 atm and i play on default, using hardline/SoH/Hacker. With default controls. I think mostly the controls you use depends on your gun selection, if you like taking your enemy out from a range rather than up close and personal, then yeah i would use tactical, but i like being in my opponents face with any type of gun.
If you liked rushing, than you would understand that dropshotting is one of the most important aspects of the CQ game.
Just have fun. When i started to play COD my first game was mw2 and i sucked. Igot like 5 kills and 20 deaths. But i just played and had fun now i am on black ops my killstreak is 18 and kdr is 1.72 so i have improved a lot.
Yes, I agree that kids should be able to play video games. It teaches them tactics, reflexes etc. I'm 13 and play games such as Black Ops. What's wrong with that? I think that it's ok for younger kids to be playing black ops as long as they don't become obsessed with it and make it their life long goal to get a better kdr. I do think that under ten is for sure too young to be playing , and u probably shouldn't at all until u r at least 13 unless u r super responsible.

Unknown like I said I really dont have problems with teenagers playing, I was a hardcore gamer by 13-14. Its the kids younger than 12 that most of us have serious problems with. I am 16 and i prefer talking and playing with 12 year old kids (no im not a pervert) i believe they are better to talk than to someone who is older and swears like there is no tomorrow. I personally believe that Cod is a good game as it taught me patience, reactions, and not to get angry. These lessons can be vital for young teenagers and it turns them into responsible adults. On the other hand i think it is wrong to have a child under ten to be playing fps games it is just stupid in my opinion- What ever happened to younger gamers playing crash bandicoot! I wouldn't expect any 13 yr olds to be playing Black Ops, mainly because in the UK it's rated 18 & I believe it's rated M in the US - Mature. At 10-15, are you mature? Of course not! Personally, I couldn't really care less BUT why do kids feel it necessary to shriek down the mic?....Especially when I've just got in from working all day!
Anyway, I've read these tips & others (trust me, I ain't good, far from it) & personally I've found that the only way I get better is by playing game after game after game. That way I encounter every scenario & can learn from it for next time. Reading helps, playing over & over will keep you alive.

Im not the best at black ops to be honest. I've got a respectable 1.31 KD and being 13 Im not exactly the oldest of the community. I do however remember the older games like worms, james pond and pocket fighter. These games became obsolete so i got a ps2 and then got really into FIFA and crash bandicoot. I play Black ops often and tbh i reckon people my age are mature enough, and when you look back on these years you imagine yourself as being a lot more immature and unintelligent. not true. don't give me shit about how your job sucks and you wanna play a game without kids/teenagers, because this is a free society, and if you dont like it then go to China.

I don't like the fact that this turned into an arguement about age. Really, I'm 14, pur parents are ok with us playing these games, then who are you to decide whether or not we should play it? Granted there are immature kids a lot on CoD, but you have a mute button. I've seen kids more mature than you adults, especially when it comes to knowing when to stop talkiing trash and play the game. We aren't wasting our lives not playing with friends, because we can play with them when we can't hang out with them in real life. What's so bad about that?
Now, as for tips.

Dropshtting ruined the tactical button layout, and ffs isn't even humanly possible. Seriously, if you were a half decent player when you wrote the tips, you would know that there is a sort of unspoken code of conduct within the blackops coommuntiy. In of which, campers noobtubes dropshotting, famas whoring, 74u whoring and a few other things are frowned upon. And frankly anyone who does anything of the sort becomes a target for trash talk or purginng like the jews of old. Not trying to be racist there, bbut it pretty much makes everyone personally want to fuck you over, and everyone starts being cheap. Then where does the fun of the game go? It dissapears.
Running and hiding pretty much will end up with someone camping in a corner as soon as they get shot at and waiting for the shooter to round the corner, and pop them off.
Sprinting around a corner has its exceptions, and steady aim pro almost completely eliminates the disadvantage to going around corners full speed. And nine times out of ten, you aren't going to find anyone around the corner unless their camping anyhow.
Grenades... yes their helpful, but no they shouldn't be used in open warfare like you scenario suggests. If they don't see yo, you pop them both off with headshots, and clear the building they came out of with a flash. Lethal grenades in blackops are good on small maps, but when you are able to see your opponent, and there's nowhere to pop a grenade at, that's where you switch to tomohawks. Short version; depending on the map set your classes accordingly. The bigger maps with cover are good, but big maps with little to no cover, when are you going to be able to toss one without being shot at?
Right. That's about it I think.
I won't bother pointing out the fact that if you flash two people with one flashbang, you won't be able to tell if there are nore than one person. So yeah.. consider yourself dead three ways to Sunday.

Playing violent games is known, as a fact, to decrease your chances AND ability to do something violent in real life. I'm an all-honor, G.T., straight A student and i dont get in any trouble with violence or that kinda stuff. And if you dont know what GT means, it means Gifted and Talented.
I think the tactics are pretty good just except the tactical grenade one were you see the two guys in S&D because it would take enough time for at least one guy to finish you off before you even prone behind some cover because in black ops when a guy starts shooting you and you get behind cover like a wall or something then he will continue to shoot and he will still kill you BEHIND THE WALL so I recommend just to try and kill these two guys because the way you said isn't pretty good but no offense to you as these were great tips and I learned a lot from them so thanks and again this is just my opinion so if anyone thinks I'm fucked up that's their own problem to worry about.

But to the thread I'd say good tips. Tactical is the most importan no matter how you play. LW PRO, SOH PRO,MARATHON OR HACKER are very important because timing osbeverything moving fast reloading fast or knowing where eq or explosives are.
Only reason I'm here is because I was looking up B.O2 which comes out in November.

Hey, I’m 50. I don’t get to play much. I suck real bad, but I have fun. I stopped talking to people cause too many slam me. I know I suck and at 50 my reflexes are not that of a 12 year old for sure. I am absolutely no competition at all. One little kid said, “You’re not real good at this are you mister”. Well that kid who sounded like he was 5 was dead on. In one game this past weekend Demolition, I think I was 3 and 47. However two got into an argument over me. One guy said I sucked, and he was right. The other guy said to check out my accolades. I had most bombs planted, most bombs defused and most bombs destroyed. Now I can’t shoot for crap, but I can go after the main objective of the game and that was to destroy and defuse the bomb sites. I had fun. I think they were both right. My eye sight sucks too. By the time I see you 12 year old kids and I respond, I’m already dead. ? I think it’s a cool thing that anyone regardless of age or location on the planet, we can all play together. Truly awesome. Only way I can get better, is to play more and I have 2 kids of my own that are 11 and 13. They kick dads butt all over any map. I don’t have the time. These tips I will attempt. Thanks for posting. Just because kids play CoD does not mean they don't go outside. I'm 13 and 15th prestige and spend almost the whole day outside. I play like an hour or two a day.

im 13, have a 1.5+ k/d, use snipers 80% of the time. I have to stay calm and patient to snipe and. I've never yelled or raged on cod, i have gotten frusterated but you learn to stay calm and do something about it. Respect people for having the balls to get out there and make themselves that much more vulnerable when they snipe, If you dont your probably using an acr or famas thinking your the best when really your gun just shoots fast and accurately.
Remember leave the fighting on the battlefield not in the lobby. :)
